Preparation of monotectic alloys having a controlled microstructure by directional solidification under dopant-induced interface breakdown
Monotectic alloys having aligned spherical particles of rods of the minor component dispersed in a matrix of the major component are prepared by forming a melt containing predetermined amounts of the major and minor components of a chosen monotectic system, providing in the melt a dopant capable of breaking down the liquid solid interface for the chosen alloy, and directionally solidfying the melt at a selected temperature gradient and a selected rate of movement of the liquid-solid interface (growth rate). Shaping of the minor component into spheres or rods and the spacing between them are controlled by the amount of dopant and the temperature gradient and growth rate values. Suspicionless Drug Testing and Chandler v. Miller: Is the Supreme Court Making the Right Decisions
During the last decade, the United States Supreme Court has rendered four major decisions regarding the validity of suspicionless drug testing policies. Such drug testing policies have become a common way for employers and other interested parties-including the government-both to deter the use of drugs and to determine who is acting under the influence of illegal narcotics. Because government officials often randomly select individuals for drug testing, some of these individuals have charged that a governmental drug testing policy violates the Fourth Amendment. The Supreme Court found this argument unconvincing in three cases decided between 1989 and 1997, but in its most recent decision the Court found the argument persuasive and struck down the drug testing policy in question. This Note will explain how the Supreme Court\u27s most recent drug testing decision fails to follow established-and unrenounced-Supreme Court precedent
Determination of the gaseous hydrogen ductile-brittle transition in copper-nickel alloys
A series of copper-nickel alloys were fabricated, notched tensile specimens machined for each alloy, and the specimens tested in 34.5 MPa hydrogen and in air. A notched tensile ratio was determined for each alloy and the hydrogen environment embrittlement (HEE) determined for the alloys of 47.7 weight percent nickel to 73.5 weight percent nickel. Stacking fault probability and stacking fault energies were determined for each alloy using the x ray diffraction line shift and line profiles technique. Hydrogen environment embrittlement was determined to be influenced by stacking fault energies; however, the correlation is believed to be indirect and only partially responsible for the HEE behavior of these alloys
SOYBEAN TRADER: A MICROCOMPUTER SIMULATION OF INTERNATIONAL AGRICULTURAL TRADE
Soybean Trader is a microcomputer simulation of international grain trading. The program uses the format of a graphics-oriented game to teach basic economic principles and to stimulate interest in agricultural trade. Profits from trading serve as a score, and competition is encouraged by ranking top scores in Trader's Hall of Fame. Low energy electron scattering from DNA and RNA bases: shape resonances and radiation damage
Calculations are carried out to determine elastic scattering cross sections
and resonance energies for low energy electron impact on uracil and on each of
the DNA bases (thymine, cytosine, adenine, guanine), for isolated molecules in
their equilibrium geometry. Our calculations are compared with available theory
and experiment. We also attempt to correlate this information with experimental
dissociation patterns through an analysis of the temporary anion structures
